There is little in the way of preparation for a kidney ultrasound. The primary requirement is to drink at least 24 ounces of a clear liquid an hour or more before the procedure.
The stones will only show on an xray if they are blocking the ureter or they are calcific made of calcium.
However ultrasound scan remains a very useful first diagnostic step in emergency rooms. But i must say kidney stones are usualy more of a 10 or 11 on a pain scale of 1 10 so if it is only a 5 or 6 for you i would think it wasn t a stone.
